Lip reader reveals conversation between Donald Trump and French President
Donald Trump met with Emmanuel Macron at the 52nd G7 Summit, taking place in Évian, France. The U.S. president appeared to share an awkward handshake with Macron while greeting him at Évian-les-Bains.
According to lipreading expert Nicola Hickling, Trump greeted the French First Lady Brigitte Macron, calling her “sweetheart” (via The Irish Star). The reported conversation comes after Trump had criticized the French president’s marriage in the past, among other clashes and tense diplomatic relations.
Hickling decoded that Trump said, “I’m ready for tonight,” while greeting Macron, followed by, “pleasure.” The lip reader added, “He then quickly greets Emmanuel’s wife, Brigette.” She quoted Trump directly, reporting that the president said, “Hello, sweetheart.” The first lady of France then reportedly wished Trump a happy birthday, according to Hickling. Trump then appeared to say, “Thank you for the money,” to which Brigitte replied, “Happy to help a good cause.”
Hickling further reported that Macron proceeded to point to the side and tell Trump, “Can you wait with the others over there?” The gesture reportedly came off as awkward. The U.S. president then turned to Brigitte, allegedly telling her, “I’m struggling with what he is saying. Have you forgotten how to speak English?”
Hickling added, “Emmanuel then grabs Trump by the arm. As Trump steps down from the podium, he looks back at Emmanuel and says: DT: ‘I imagine it’s not easy being you.'”
The G7 Summit is being held between June 15 and June 17, 2026. Besides Trump and Macron, other world leaders attending the global summit include UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and more.
