Donald Trump’s NBC Poll Shows Shocking Numbers

President Donald Trump’s approval rating has hit a second-term low. A new NBC News poll released on his 80th birthday reveals how far his support has slipped. The poll, conducted among 2,400 registered voters from May 29 to June 7, puts Trump’s approval rating at 39% among all U.S. adults. It is his lowest in the outlet’s poll since his first term. The survey carries a margin of error of +/- 2 percentage points.

The numbers place Donald Trump in territory the outlet last tracked during July 2020, which had the COVID-19 pandemic and nationwide protests following the murder of George Floyd. Additionally, it gives a picture just five months before November’s midterm elections, where Republicans already hold slim majorities in both the House and Senate. The same poll found that 49% of registered voters want Democrats to take control of Congress, compared to 44% who prefer continued Republican control, with 7% undecided.

Rural America — a cornerstone of Trump’s victories in 2016 and 2024 — is also showing signs of strain. A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted June 3 to 8, found Trump’s approval rating among rural voters fell to 50% in June, down drastically from 60% in February 2025, just after he began his second term. Voters in rural areas cited dissatisfaction with Trump’s handling of the economy and the rising cost of living as key drivers of the decline.

Those concerns are playing out against a backdrop of broader economic uncertainty. Americans are grappling with surging gas and grocery prices, mostly linked to the ongoing Iran war — a conflict Trump suggested on June 14 may be nearing its end.

Despite the overall dip, Republican voters are largely holding firm. GOP support for Trump has slipped from 88% in March to 82% in the latest NBC poll, with 58% saying they “strongly” approve. It is down from 63% who said the same in March.
