A violent slasher that became 2026’s flop is now the biggest movie on HBO Max. It came out on the platform on June 12, and soon it obliterated the competition. The turnaround is one of the year’s sharpest examples of a theatrical misfire becoming a streaming phenomenon.
They Will Kill You is dominating on HBO Max after streaming release
They Will Kill You leapfrogged straight to No. 1 in the United States, unseating the music documentary Earth, Wind & Fire, according to data from FlixPatrol. The horror-comedy didn’t just dominate at home; it topped the charts in other countries as well.
Helmed by Kirill Sokolov from a script he co-wrote with Alex Litvak, They Will Kill You follows Asia Reaves, played by Deadpool 2 star Zazie Beetz. Asia fights to survive a night inside the Virgil. It’s a demonic cult’s twisted death-trap lair. The premise has drawn comparisons to Ready or Not, trading wedding-night terror for a brazen battle of epic kills and dark humor.
The cast bolsters its cult credentials. Beetz stars alongside Tom Felton, Myha’la, Paterson Joseph, Heather Graham, James Remar, and Oscar-winning star Patricia Arquette. Behind the camera, Andy and Barbara Muschietti produced alongside Dan Kagan.
This HBO Max success initially faced a 2026 box office failure. Reportedly produced for $20 million, the R-rated action-horror ended its theatrical run with just $19 million worldwide, despite reviews that leaned positive. The ComingSoon review says the movie, “arrives like a blood-soaked adrenaline shot to the heart of the ‘eat-the-rich’ horror subgenre—loud, vicious, and fully aware of its own excess.” Audiences were even warmer; the Rotten Tomatoes audience score sits at 77%, suggesting word-of-mouth has fueled the at-home resurgence.
After all, 2026 has proven to be a banner year for original horror, with Obsession and Backrooms becoming two of the highest-grossing films of all time. They Will Kill You offers a bloody, offbeat alternative for audiences hungry for more.
