US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire deal with Iran on Sunday, according to Al Jazeera. The agreement will immediately end hostilities between the two nations. Trump also authorized the toll-free reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He added, “Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” The Strait had remained largely closed since Feb. 28 after a US-Israeli assault on Iran.

Iran’s deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi later confirmed the agreement on Sunday. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif initially announced the deal on X. He stated both sides declared “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”

An official signing ceremony will take place in Switzerland on Friday, June 19. Sharif thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye for their mediation contributions. Qatar credited its partnership with Pakistan in reaching the memorandum of understanding.

Trump separately warned Iran in a New York Times interview about potential consequences. He suggested the US could restart military operations or become “the guardian of the Middle East.” He also hinted that a more comprehensive peace agreement would follow.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed readiness to aid further technical talks between Washington and Tehran. He stated that “toll-free freedom of navigation must now be restored” in the Strait. French President Emmanuel Macron similarly called for the waterway’s “urgent and unconditional reopening.”

US Vice President JD Vance praised the deal as a potential turning point. He stated, “I think we can safely say, with confidence, that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.” Vance described the agreement as marking a possible “new era” in the Middle East.
