Gavin Newsom Mocks Donald Trump ‘Sleeping’, Calls Him ‘Dozy Don’

California Governor Gavin Newsom has thrown shade at Donald Trump for seemingly sleeping once again during an official press conference. The former San Francisco mayor took to social media to share pictures of the president from the event and jokingly labeled him ‘Dozy Don.’

On June 4, Gavin Newsom posted four images of Donald Trump from a Thursday Oval Office conference, all of which featured the businessman-turned-politician with his eyes closed. “DOZY DON IS BACK (HE NEVER LEFT),” Newsom’s press office wrote on their official X (formerly Twitter) account.

The governor’s quip comes just one day after Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the president against Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) (via Aaron Rupar). When pressed about whether he has seen Trump sleeping during an official meeting, Rubio replied, “I’ve never seen him fall asleep. On the contrary, the guy doesn’t sleep, which is a big problem cause he calls me at 2 in the morning; he calls me at 5 in the morning. I like to sleep a little bit, maybe not 12 hours, at least six…The other day, he was at the Oval Office at 12:30 AM.”

Lieu then questioned Trump’s recurring health examinations, which contradicted Rubio’s remarks about the president’s medical condition. Rubio responded by saying, “This president we have – this is a guy that literally doesn’t sleep. He works day and night, long hours, every single day…He works inhumane hours. I’ve been on foreign trips that he doesn’t sleep in the whole flight. And everyone else is sleeping on the plane, and he’s wandering the hallways looking for someone to wake up and talk to…He has an incredible amount of energy…This is not a president that sleeps or is cognitively impaired in any way, shape, or form, and, in fact, is incredibly active.”

Notably, Gavin Newsom has referred to the president as ‘Dozy Don’ on multiple occasions. He trolled Donald Trump with the same moniker in April 2026 after the latter appeared to be sleeping during a press conference.
