Fans of a cyberpunk action thriller film just got their biggest update in years about the franchise’s future. The canceled sequel series’ star revealed new story details and why the project never made it past development.
Canceled sequel series to Upgrade gets new details from Logan Marshall-Green
Logan Marshall-Green has revealed new details about the scrapped Upgrade sequel TV series in an interview with ScreenRant. The actor confirmed that multiple versions of the follow-up existed before its quiet cancellation. One iteration would have brought back his character Grey, picking up right after the original 2018 film.
“There have been a few iterations,” Marshall-Green said during the interview. He added that one version shifted focus back to Grey’s story. “They kind of decided, ‘No, wait, let’s go back and pick up right after the movie, and let’s focus on Grey,'” he explained. The star also noted that “incredible auteurs and show creators” were attached to that version.
Blumhouse originally announced the sequel series in May 2020. Leigh Whannell and Tim Walsh were set to co-create it, with Walsh serving as showrunner. The project ultimately never made it past the development stage.
Marshall-Green attributed the cancellation to external factors rather than creative issues. “A lot of it had to do with climate and politics and the pandemic,” he shared. He remained hopeful about the franchise’s future, however. “I don’t want to speak out of turn, because I still feel like there is a next chapter for that universe,” he noted.
The actor also expressed strong enthusiasm for potentially reuniting with Whannell on the project. “I know Leigh and I would work together in a snap,” Marshall-Green said. He praised the original film’s enduring fanbase as well. “It’s become its own creature, you know, cult creature. I get a lot of Upgrade love, I won’t lie,” he added.
Walsh previously compared his vision for the series to A Clockwork Orange. His version would have featured a new STEM chip implanted into criminals for rehabilitation purposes. Whannell continues working closely with Blumhouse on projects including The Invisible Man and Wolf Man.
