Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew once earned the description “the happiest divorced couple in the world” after continuing to live together long after ending their marriage. According to royal biographer Ingrid Seward, the pair maintained an unusually close bond for years after their split, so close that Ferguson once reportedly answered the phone by referring to Andrew as her “husband.”

Speaking to the Mirror, Seward recalled spending time with Ferguson when Andrew called unexpectedly. “I remember on one occasion a long time ago, I was with her, and he rang up,” Seward claimed. “She stood up and said, ‘Hello, husband.’” The royal author pointed out that the couple had already separated by that stage, but insisted that the label reflected how they continued to see one another despite their divorce. “He wasn’t really her husband at that point,” Seward explained, “but that’s how they’ve always seen each other.”
Ferguson and Andrew finalized their divorce in 1996 after 10 years of marriage. The pair remained living together for years at Royal Lodge in Windsor while co-parenting daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. In recent years, however, their lives have reportedly shifted dramatically amid the fallout surrounding Andrew’s royal exile and mounting scrutiny over his past associations.
Andrew was recently forced to leave Royal Lodge and relocate to the smaller Marsh Farm property on the Sandringham estate. Ferguson, meanwhile, has largely stayed out of public view in recent months and was last reportedly seen at an Austrian ski resort. Despite the distance, Seward believes the former couple likely remains in contact. “I don’t think she’d want to leave him high and dry,” the royal expert said. “He’s the father of her children.” She added that Andrew has always viewed Ferguson as “the most important woman in his life” because of their shared family.
