Marlon Wayans recently opened up about navigating his friendship with Dave Chappelle while also supporting his trans son Kai. During an interview with Variety, the comedian addressed the criticism surrounding Chappelle’s material involving transgender people. He made it clear that he does not believe Chappelle’s comedy comes from hatred toward the transgender community. “I love Dave and he’s like a brother,” he said.

According to the actor, “I wouldn’t hang with Dave if he was full of hate. I don’t hang with people like that. I know Dave’s heart, and his intention isn’t to punch down.” He added that he believes Chappelle sees himself as defending comedy and creative freedom. “Dave wants to freely tell his jokes, and if you’re going to be anti-comedy, then he’s going to keep attacking you until you learn to have a sense of humor. He’s just standing there and defending his front line as a comedian,” Wayans said.

The actor further explained that he approaches both relationships from different perspectives. “As a comedian, I respect his journey. And as a friend, I respect his journey. And for my child, I respect their journey,” he said. Wayans also noted that he believes he can understand both perspectives while navigating the situation as both a father and friend. He added, “ I’m between them, so I can explain both sides to each other.”

The discussion comes years after Chappelle faced backlash over jokes involving transgender people in several stand-up specials, including his 2021 Netflix release The Closer.
