In the wake of the release of the Sheriff Country finale, showrunner Matt Lopez has confirmed a major detail about Season 2. The series co-executive producer addressed the final episode’s startling twist in a recent interview, wherein he revealed that the sophomore installment will witness a time jump before eventually building up to Season 1’s shocker.
Matt Lopez teases Sheriff Country Season 2 details
The veteran writer surprised fans by stating that Season 2 of the police procedural drama will start with a time jump.
Matt Lopez’s statements while speaking with Soaps.com come as a shock to many, considering the explosive note on which the first season of Sheriff Country ended. In Episode 20, an emotional Wes (William Earl Brown) unexpectedly ends up revealing to Mickey (Morena Baccarin) that her mother is none other than DEA’s Eva Santos (Rachel Ticotin).
“The way that scene ended with, like, ‘Mickey, this is your mother,’ it almost begs to be a direct pickup, and for that reason, I was like, ‘Let’s not do a direct pickup. Let’s surprise people,'” Lopez remarked. “I think there’s a really cool, rewarding little bit of a time jump, and then after the time jump, we’ll fill in what happened between the last frame of the last episode of Season 1 and the first frame of the first episode of Season 2, and that also is kind of delicious and fun because there’s some surprises there.”
When asked about plot details regarding Sheriff Country Season 2, Matt Lopez also said that “there will be a really interesting storyline where some of the decisions, even that were made for the best of reasons, that Mickey has made as sheriff of Edgewater County, going back to Season 1, but also continuing into Season 2, will result in a tremendous amount of pressure on her in her office, and with ripple effects for everyone in her orbit, [like] Boone, Cassidy, Mickey obviously, Wes. Mickey’s standing as sheriff, and the public support that she enjoys, there will be some tension on that in Season 2 in a really compelling way.”
While CBS has greenlit a sequel season for Sheriff Country, the installment does not have an official release date yet.
