The Boroughs is quickly becoming Netflix’s next breakout sci-fi hit following the success of Stranger Things. According to FlixPatrol, the series ranked No. 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 shows chart in the United States on May 24, 2026. It has outperformed shows such as The Roast of Kevin Hart, Nemesis, Mating Season, and Worst Ex Ever.
The Boroughs debuted on Netflix on May 21, 2026. The sci-fi mystery drama was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. It blends supernatural elements with themes of aging, grief, and survival. The series follows Sam Cooper, who relocates to a retirement community with his family after the recent loss of his wife. He does so despite having little interest in living there on his own.
Hoping he will adapt to the new environment, his daughter Claire encourages him to stay and give the community a chance. Instead, Sam soon finds himself pulled into an unexpected situation. Their predicament involves several residents and a dangerous supernatural force connected to time. The cast includes Alfred Molina as Sam Cooper, Alfre Woodard as Judy Daniels, Denis O’Hare as Wally Baker, Clarke Peters as Art Daniels, Carlos Miranda as Paz Navarro, and Jena Malone as Claire, among others.
The series has received strong praise from critics following its release. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show currently holds a 95% critics’ score based on 43 reviews. Meanwhile, audience ratings stand at 85%.
