Stephen Colbert Didn’t Let Donald Trump Overshadow His Last Talk Show

Stephen Colbert was reportedly expected to mention Donald Trump on his last talk show episode. On May 21, the comedian bid farewell to CBS’s The Late Show with its final episode, and he didn’t let the U.S. President overshadow the finale. Before the airing, people seemed to expect him to make political jokes without restraint. But the host opted to honor his special moments on the sets and reminisce about old times with esteemed celebrity guests.

Stephen Colbert almost omits mentioning Donald Trump on last talk show

Stephen Colbert almost didn’t talk about Donald Trump on his last talk show episode. According to Entertainment Weekly, the host had “doubled down on the jokes” against the president after CBS canceled The Late Show. Reportedly, the 62-year-old was expected to take a jab at the politician in the finale episode. But he seemingly decided to omit almost any mention of Trump.

Colbert only hinted at the president during an interview with the Beatles legend, Paul McCartney. The host asked the rock legend about “February of ’64” when the notable band made their American TV debut on the same stage. But it was not The Late Show, instead, it was the Ed Sullivan Show.

Recalling his experience on the very stage, McCartney said it was the band members’ first time in America. They were told it was the “biggest show.” He quipped, saying that they had “never heard of it.” According to him, the makeup team got them ready and “it was like, bright orange.” After listening to this line, Colbert couldn’t hide his grin filled with mischief. He sarcastically commented, “That’s very popular in certain circles these days.”

Aside from this tiny joke, the host ended his run on The Late Show Trump-free. He had a few celebrity guests, who made Colbert sit in the guest seat and be interviewed. He also delivered an emotional message to his viewers, expressing his gratitude.
