Stephen Colbert appears to have a positive outlook on The Late Show’s cancellation. He believes that the show being pulled off the air “saved his life,” as it was demanding too much out of him every day. The final episode is set to air on Thursday, May 21. Earlier, Colbert had disclosed what he’s set to do next, following the show’s conclusion.
Stephen Colbert talks about late show cancellation
In a conversation with PEOPLE, Colbert claimed that The Late Show’s cancellation saved his life while providing a reason for why he thinks so. He said, “It takes a lot of bone marrow to do the show every day, and now I’ll be stepping down with enough time, enough energy to do other things that I want to do.”
The host also expressed how he wants to spend time with his three children, Madeleine, Peter, and John, and put his energy into fatherhood responsibilities. He regarded this fatherhood stage as “best,” before reflecting on being involved in arguments with kids. “To lose an argument with an adult child over something you thought you knew about. I mean, if you can take it, it’s pretty great,” he explained.
In the same interview, Colbert also revealed what he plans to do next after his show ends. He said that first, he would be attending his brother’s wedding in Washington, D.C.. “My [eight] brothers and sisters and [their] husbands and wives are coming to the last show, and then we’re all getting on the train the next day and going down to D.C. to go to Tommy’s wedding,” he shared.
Revealing what he intends to do to mark the wedding celebration, he added that they have plans to drink and sing. He’s glad that the week is all about family, as, after the wedding, he will be celebrating his son John, who graduates from college.
