Sydney Sweeney Faces Backlash for Using R-Word on Euphoria

Sydney Sweeney faces heat for using the R-word on Euphoria. Love on the Spectrum star Dani Bowman has slammed Sweeney for casually using the word on the show. Notably, the actress is drawing major controversy over her X-rated scenes and problematic dialogue this season. This recent incident adds to the growing problems associated with HBO’s flagship show.

Dani Bowman condemned Sydney Sweeney for using the R-word on Euphoria. In the show, Cassie claims that she’s “not a r*****” after someone accuses her of sounding like a Democrat (via The Independent).

Bowman, who is on the autism spectrum, says it’s “painful” to see the word become “socially acceptable” again. She adds that the “dehumanising” term “should be banned.” The 31-year-old told TMZ, “We worked way too hard for inclusion and acceptance to normalise the R word again. That word has been used for decades to bully, humiliate and dehumanise neurodiverse people, and bringing it back like it’s edgy or funny, it’s not progress. It’s a step backwards.”

Furthermore, Bowman explains that she has spent years trying to educate people and spread awareness. “Representation means nothing if respect disappears the second people think it’s trendy to mock disability again,” the 31-year-old adds. Moreover, Bowman states that she feels “totally disrespected” by the use of the ableist slur on TV and streaming platforms. The campaigner reiterates, “This word should be banned.”

However, this isn’t the first time Sweeney’s Cassie has gotten into trouble. Previously, she referenced the N-word in one of the episodes.

Online personality Trisha Paytas made a cameo appearance, wherein she played one of the podcast hosts (via HuffPost). In the episode, Paytas asked Cassie, “Oh, so you think [men] are being too restricted by society?” To which Cassie replied, “Yes! Like, if a man today were to say that he wants a girlfriend who could cook or clean, he might as well be screaming the n-word!” A visibly shocked Paytas confessed she actually had no idea that Sweeney was going to use the N-word.
