The 2009 romantic comedy The Proposal, starring Ryan Reynolds, has emerged as a surprise streaming hit for Netflix this month. Years after becoming a box office success, the film has once again piqued viewers’ interest on the platform.

Ryan Reynolds-led The Proposal reemerges on Netflix

According to FlixPartol’s data for May 13, 2026, The Proposal is #10 on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies list in the United States. The film has remained in the Top 10 for over a week, peaking at #3 last weekend.

Meanwhile, Sally Field and Lewis Pullman’s heartwarming film, Remarkably Bright Creatures, is leading the charts. It is followed by Michael B. Jordan’s Swapped at #2, Jennifer Aniston’s Mother’s Day at #3, Rihanna’s Home at #4, and Charlize Theron’s Apex at #5.

The Proposal centers on Margaret Tate, a Canadian editor-in-chief at an American publishing company, who faces deportation from the United States. To prevent this from happening, she convinces her assistant, Andrew Paxton, to pretend they are engaged. Andrew then persuades her to visit his family in Alaska. This results in a series of hilarious and awkward incidents that gradually bring the two into a more meaningful relationship.

Anne Fletcher directed the film from an original story by Peter Chiarelli.

The film’s cast features Ryan Reynolds as Andrew, Sandra Bullock as Margaret, Malin Åkerman as Gertrude, Craig T. Nelson as Joe Paxton, Mary Steenburgen as Grace, and Betty White as Annie Paxton. Reportedly, Julia Roberts was the first choice for the role of Margaret (via The LA Times). But after she turned it down, the role ultimately went to Bullock.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures handled The Proposal’s distribution and released it on June 19, 2009. Upon release, it garnered a mixed-to-positive reception. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has maintained a user score of 68% while the critics’ score is at a lower 45%. The trend is similar on Metacritic, where it has a user score of 6.6 and a critics’ score of 48.

The positive reception from the audience resulted in an incredible box office run for the film. Made on a reported $40 million budget, The Proposal earned more than $317.3 million at the global box office.
