Shangri-La Frontier and Assassination Classroom Season 2 coming to Netflix

Season 2 of both Shangri-La Frontier and Assassination Classroom will become available to stream on Netflix from Monday, June 1, 2026.

Shangri-La Frontier is based on a Japanese web novel series by Katarina, titled Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Idoman to su. It began in May 2017 and is still ongoing. As of May 2026, it has a total of 26 volumes. The anime’s first season began airing in October 2023, while Season 2 premiered a year later in October 2024.

The story takes place in a distant future where full-dive VR gaming has become mainstream. It follows a high school student named Rakuro Hizutome, who has a strange hobby of mastering “trash games” that are deemed terrible and bug-ridden. When a video game store owner recommends him to play Shangri-La Frontier, a popular full-dive VR game, he uses all the skills he has acquired over the years to master it.

Currently, Shangri-La Frontier holds a score of 8.1 based on over 240k user ratings on the anime review-aggregator site, MyAnimeList. On IMDb, it currently has a user score of 7.6 out of 10. Meanwhile, Season 3 is reportedly deep in development and is set to air sometime in January 2027 (via Crunchyroll).

On the other hand, Assassination Classroom is an action-comedy based on Yusei Matsui’s manga series, Ansatsu Kyoushitsu. It ran from 2012 to 2016 in Weekly Shōnen Jump, and has 21 volumes.

The story begins after a mysterious creature destroys a large portion of the Moon. Soon, an alien arrives on Earth, claims responsibility for the destruction, and threatens to decimate the planet next. Surprisingly, it gives humans a year to prevent it by becoming a homeroom teacher and training students how to assassinate it.

The anime was a two-season series that premiered in March 2015. The second and final installment followed in January 2016. The series concluded on June 30, 2016, with a total of 47 episodes. In terms of rating, the show currently has a 7.9 user rating on IMDb. Meanwhile, on MyAnimeList, over 1.2 million users have rated it an average of 8.07.
