As 3 Body Problem moves further into its ambitious long-term story, one original cast member may not make the journey ahead. A recent update from a season 1 star has quietly raised uncertainty about the show’s evolving future.
CCH Pounder on 3 Body Problem Season 2 return possibility
3 Body Problem, season 2 and season 3 may not include CCH Pounder as Secretary General Lillian Joseph. In an interview with ScreenRant, Pounder said, “I don’t think they know what to do with her.” She added, “If you look at the timeline of how it’s going, no one lives that long.” Ryan Northrup and Grant Hermanns published the interview on May 8, 2026.
Pounder appeared in season 1 as Secretary General Joseph, a supporting character overseeing responses to the alien threat. The series adapts novels by Liu Cixin and spans centuries within its timeline. Pounder noted that the story’s extended chronology complicates the character’s future involvement. She stated, “It’d be like my great, great, great, great grandself will be playing the role.”
3 Body Problem season 2 began filming in July 2025 in Budapest, Hungary. Cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt later confirmed production wrapped in March 2026 through an Instagram post. The report stated Pounder was not involved during season 2 filming. Season 3 filming is expected to begin in June 2026.
The source also explained that Secretary General Joseph does not appear in Liu Cixin’s original novels. The books introduce new central characters as the timeline advances hundreds of years. Cryogenic freezing allows some characters to survive across eras, though the narrative focus changes over time. The adaptation by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo could therefore feature a significantly different cast in later seasons.
Netflix released 3 Body Problem on March 21, 2024. Season 2 currently targets a release during the second half of 2026. Netflix has not announced a release window for season 3.
