Harry Potter star Tom Felton shares his take on his iconic character line that became popular
Tom Felton, the talented actor behind Draco Malfoy, recently shared his insights on the signature phrase that has become synonymous with the character. The English actor‘s most iconic line as the franchise’s antagonist is a single yet loaded word: “Potter.” The sneer encapsulates the character’s disdain and arrogance, leaving an indelible mark on Potterheads worldwide.
The Altered actor recently revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he was oblivious that his “Potter” pronunciation has become a fandom favorite meme. “I don’t know how that’s become an iconic thing,” he said. “I certainly had no idea.” Felton shared that his snide way of saying “Potter” stemmed from his childhood. He grew up with three older brothers who would tease him with names like “maggot or runt of the pack.”
“I don’t remember ever thinking about it for a second,” the 38-year-old added. “It just got more and more venomous.” Speaking about the Harry Potter franchise’s enduring impact, Felton revealed that it amazes him how its elements have become pop culture staples. He further admitted that he never thought his lines would become iconic.
Felton is currently reprising his role as Draco Malfoy in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Interestingly, the script didn’t originally include his iconic “Potter” line. It was a spontaneous moment in rehearsals that caught director John Tiffany’s ear and made it to the final show.
During the podcast, Felton also praised the franchise’s continued growth, calling it “amazing”. He revealed he’s excited about HBO’s upcoming series based on J.K. Rowling’s books, with the first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, debuting on December 25.
