Daniel Radcliffe Reveals Why He Quit Smoking After 20 Years

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe recently opened up on why he quit smoking. He shared a deeply personal reason that led to his realization, admitting that he was smoking “pretty heavily” for over 20 years. Radcliffe also recommended a book that made it easier to achieve his goal.

Daniel Radcliffe on why he quit smoking

In a recent interview with Vulture, Daniel Radcliffe opened up about how his son, whose name is not yet public, inspired him to quit smoking. During the interview, the Harry Potter alum was asked what the one habit or substance he’d like to quit is and how he would do it.

“I’m going to do one retroactively,” the 36-year-old actor began. “I have just quit smoking — not ‘just’ anymore, but I’m going to talk about it, because I would like to mention this book to anybody else who’s interested in quitting smoking.”

The Now You See Me 2 actor went on to explain that he smoked “pretty heavily” for 20 years and not once had he thought about quitting it. However, things changed for him shortly after he welcomed his first son, whom he shares with partner, actress Erin Darke. He admitted to having “intrusive thoughts” about his own death, which was “incentive” enough to inspire him to quit smoking.

The Woman in Black actor then said that someone gave him Allen Carr’s book, The Easy Way to Quit Smoking. He clarified that although reading the book might not help everyone, it certainly helped him. While he couldn’t explain how it helped, he said that the book did a “Jedi mind trick” on him. “I really cannot recommend the book enough to anybody who wants to quit,” the actor advised.

Radcliffe is currently portraying Arthur Tobin on NBC’s The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins. He is also headlining a one-man, interactive Broadway show, Every Brilliant Thing, at the Hudson Theatre in New York. It is a limited-time event.
