A new update may have quietly revealed when Marvel plans to pass on the Black Panther mantle after Chadwick Boseman. While earlier expectations pointed to a sooner debut, recent reports suggest the studio has taken a more measured approach to introducing its next successor.
Marvel’s new Black Panther won’t debut in 2026 but 2027
Following the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, the studio chose not to recast T’Challa and instead wrote the character out of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Insider Daniel Richtman stated, “Marvel wanted to introduce a new Black Panther in the Avengers films and met with actors like Aaron Pierre for the role.”
Richtman further claimed the timeline has shifted, saying, “I can now say for sure that they decided not to introduce this new Black Panther in Doomsday, but in Secret Wars.” This places the reported debut in Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for release on December 17, 2027. The report suggests earlier plans included introducing the successor in Avengers: Doomsday.
A Black Panther will still appear in Doomsday, with Shuri, portrayed by Letitia Wright, continuing in the role after Wakanda Forever. Early teasers for the upcoming film feature the character. However, the report indicates that the introduction of another version may end her tenure as the sole Black Panther.
Reports link actor Damson Idris to the role, and he has expressed willingness to take it on if approached. Wakanda Forever introduced T’Challa’s son and established a narrative pathway for a successor that maintains continuity without recasting the original character.
The Multiverse Saga expands the possibilities by allowing Marvel to age the character through time displacement or alternate realities. Another theory points to T’Chanda, a historical Black Panther from Marvel Comics, as a potential multiverse variant.
If Marvel introduces a new Black Panther, the character will join an ensemble cast in Avengers: Secret Wars. The cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Pedro Pascal, and Benedict Cumberbatch, as the film concludes the current saga.
