The next supernatural thriller from Jason Reitman, the filmmaker behind 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, is in development at Sony. The company acquired the rights to the original spec script from Ian Shorr, who previously contributed to the screenplays of the 2018 horror comedy Office Uprising and the 2021 action sci-fi Infinite, featuring Mark Wahlberg.
Jason Reitman to produce 71 Minutes at Sony
Reitman will serve as a producer on 71 Minutes through his Ghost Corp banner alongside Erica Mills. At the time of this article’s composition, Reitman is not set to shoulder the directorial duties (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Details about 71 Minutes remain strictly under wraps. However, according to the outlet mentioned above, the movie’s description states that it’s a real-time thriller revolving around a man trying to survive “a ticking clock scenario” as pursuers chase him. The title of the movie apparently refers to the time the protagonist has to survive before sunrise.
After Shorr developed the script on spec, it garnered considerable interest. The Hollywood Reporter says that over 20 production companies and several studios showed interest in the project, with Sony ultimately securing the rights.
Reitman’s filmography comprises a diverse set of movies and TV shows. He made his feature film directorial debut with 2005’s satirical black comedy Thank You for Smoking, which he adapted from the 1994 novel by Christopher Buckley. He then directed Juno from a script by Diablo Cody. It received multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Cody took home the Best Original Screenplay accolade for the movie.
Reitman also helmed 2009’s Up in the Air, which received Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. Further, as he co-wrote the screenplay based on Walter Kirn’s namesake novel, Reitman received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside Sheldon Turner.
Additionally, he co-wrote and directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. His most recent directorial venture was 2024’s Saturday Night.
71 Minutes currently doesn’t have a release date.
