Jay-Z Name Change Meaning Revealed

Jay-Z debuts a name change. Shawn Corey Carter, known professionally as Jay-Z, has added an umlaut to his existing stage name. Hence, he is now referring to himself as JAŸ-Z for his forthcoming performance at The Roots’ Picnic in Philadelphia on May 30. He has also introduced this change to his stage name on major music streaming platforms, confirming the umlaut is now part of his identity.

Jay-Z reveals new name, here’s what it means

Jay-Z reveals a change to his existing stage name. It appears that the decision to include an umlaut in his stage name was not sudden but instead a thoughtful one. Interestingly, cover art from his earliest records, including his 1996 debut album Reasonable Doubt and the multiple breakout singles featured on the album, boasted an umlaut. Hence, it is a nod back to his artistic roots.

However, this isn’t the first time the “Renegade” hitmaker has attempted to alter his stage name. In 2013, he famously removed the hyphen from his name. The 56-year-old rapper explained in a Big Boy’s Neighborhood interview, “The hyphen was really big back in the day. It’s not useful anymore. You change with the times.”

Furthermore, Jay continued, “I had umlauts over one of the letters. I removed the umlaut, too” (via E News). However, just four years later, the rapper changed his mind when he reintroduced the hyphen for his 2017 album 4:44. His team issued a statement to Entertainment Weekly, “Jay Z is now a relic of the past, consigned to the dustbin of history. In its place stands JAY-Z, now with the hyphen back in its place and the whole name in all caps.”

Moreover, Jay is making a major comeback in the coming months. His company, Roc Nation, announced that the rapper will perform two hometown shows at Yankee Stadium over the summer.

On July 10, the 56-year-old rapper will celebrate the 30th anniversary of his first album. The following day, on July 11, Jay will celebrate the 25th anniversary concert for The Blueprint (via USA Today).
