As questions continue around Meghan Markle’s business plans and public image, a PR expert warns that her upcoming retreat to Australia could deepen the crisis and make Prince Harry appear “out of touch” by association. Mayah Riaz, the expert, weighed in on the Duchess of Sussex’s scheduled appearance at a luxurious “girls’ weekend” retreat in Sydney.
Her Best Life podcast founder Gemma O’Neill will host the event, and it will go on from April 17 to April 19, where organisers say Markle and O’Neill will discuss “life, parenting, relationships, building a global business and navigating a public persona.”
How Meghan Markle’s Australia retreat risks Prince Harry looking ‘out of touch,’ says expert
In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, PR expert Mayah Riaz discussed how Meghan Markle’s Australia retreat can exacerbate the crisis for Prince Harry. The price point has already raised eyebrows. Tickets start at around $2,699 per person, with an upgraded option of $3,199 that costs more for added perks. So, for critics who already question how the Sussexes connect with regular supporters, Riaz explained that the optics create a larger risk.
Riaz warned, “Well, this is where perception becomes a problem.” Moreover, she emphasized, “At a time when they’re facing criticism around relatability and authenticity, attaching her name to a high-ticket, exclusive event feels totally tone deaf. It plays into the narrative that they are out of touch.” She further explained, “It risks undermining any message about wanting to connect with everyday people.”
Additionally, Riaz flagged, “It sends the message that access to Meghan is a luxury product, which really doesn’t sit comfortably with the brand they’ve been trying to build.” She told The Mirror, “Overall, I’d say this isn’t a collapse, but it is a turning point.” Riaz added, “They either reset and become more focused and credible, or they risk drifting into celebrity noise without substance.”
As Markle prepares to take the stage in Sydney, the retreat now looks like more than a wellness weekend for the Duke of Sussex.
