The internet is erupting with responses to NVIDIA’s latest DLSS 5 update, with many taking to social media and forums to weigh in on the technology’s AI-enhanced visuals. However, the announcement has sparked controversy among gamers, with many criticizing the AI-generated visuals, claiming they compromise the original artistic intent.
Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) is an AI-powered rendering technology introduced in 2019. The company’s development of DLSS has prompted others, including Sony, to create their own comparable technologies, including the PlayStation 5’s PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) tool.
DLSS 5, set to launch this Fall, is touted to go beyond, leveraging AI to boost image quality significantly.
“We are reinventing computer graphics once again,” NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang announced. “DLSS 5 is the GPT moment for graphics – blending hand-crafted rendering with generative AI.”
However, the reveal sparked debate over art direction vs visual fidelity, with critics arguing that the AI tech alters the original game design, applying a generic “beauty filter” that changes character appearances.
Although CEO Huang promised developers would have controls to fine-tune DLSS 5’s impact, gamers have piled on the criticism. The update’s video racked up 15M+ views on X (formerly Twitter) in just 3 hours.
“This looks horrifically bad, nobody wants an AI slop filter on top of their game,” tweeted an X user. “Get this slop filter out of our games. you guys are an absolute joke,” echoed another. “How much money did they waste on this?” questioned a gaming enthusiast.
While it’s still months away from launch, long-awaited fans aren’t exactly jumping for joy. It remains to be seen if game developers will ultimately push back against utilizing this technology.
