The Chiefs have reportedly recruited quarterback Justin Fields amid Patrick Mahomes’ ACL rehab. The Kansas City Chiefs made a trade with the New York Jets to find a replacement for Mahomes amid his ongoing injury woes. The Chiefs needed a reliable quarterback who could replace Mahomes until he fully recovers. Both teams exchanged late-round picks to facilitate the move.
Chiefs reportedly trade QB Justin Fields from Jets
As per The Mirror US, the Kansas City Chiefs picked quarterback Justin Fields from the New York Jets, as Patrick Mahomes is still on the road to recovery. In return, the Chiefs are sending a 2027 sixth-round pick in exchange for Fields and also a 2027 seventh-rounder. Notably, the Jets covered $7 million out of Fields’ $10 million salary and hence saved more money compared to simply letting him go from the team.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Fields’ first preference for a new team was the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs had previously lost their backup quarterback, Gardner Minshew, who went to the Arizona Cardinals in free agency. Hence, they were looking for a quarterback with more experience than the one currently on the team, Chris Oladokun.
For those unversed, the Chiefs’ star quarterback, Mahomes, took a bad hit in the final two minutes of the December 14 game. It was against the Los Angeles Chargers, and he hurt his left knee. He underwent an MRI, and the team confirmed that he tore his ACL and will need to stay away from the game until he recovers.
Unfortunately, the Chiefs lost the match, suffering a crushing 13–16 defeat at the hands of the Chargers. However, fans need not worry, as the three-time Super Bowl winner signed a 10-year, $450 million extension in 2020.
In January, Mahomes revealed that his recovery was “going great,” and he was even seen walking comfortably, showing signs of massive improvement. Interestingly, a couple of years back, Mahomes gave Fields some big-brother advice when he was struggling with his game.
The 30-year-old quarterback said, “Trust your talent. Trust your instincts. He’s here for a reason. He’s made a lot of big plays happen in the NFL, college, wherever he’s been. So just trust your instincts and go out there and be the player you’ve always been.” (via Hindustan Times).
