Madagascar begins streaming on Netflix in April
Madagascar‘s streaming date for Netflix is Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
The animated film follows four zoo animals—Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippo—in New York City’s Central Park Zoo. While most of them enjoyed being the stars of the zoo, Marty dreamed of freedom and exploring the wild.
Their lives take a dramatic turn when Marty escapes the zoo, prompting the rest to follow him and bring him back. Following a series of hilarious events, the four end up on the island of Madagascar. There, they meet the leader of the lemur community, King Julien XIII.
Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath directed the film with a script they co-wrote with Mark Burton and Billy Frolick. It stars Ben Stiller as Alex, Chris Rock as Marty, Sacha Baron Cohen as King Julien XIII, David Schwimmer as Melman, and Jada Pinkett Smith as Gloria, among others.
Madagascar debuted in theaters on May 27, 2005, and received a mixed reception. While some critics praised the film’s lighthearted setting, others described the humor as relatively weak. As a result, it currently has a 55% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The users, on the other hand, praised the film as suitable enough for both kids and adults, resulting in an average rating of 67%. Furthermore, the film went on to become a massive box-office success, earning $543.2 million globally (via Box Office Mojo).
Additionally, the commercial success led to two sequels in 2008 and 2012, as well as a spin-off, Penguins of Madagascar, in 2014. The film also spawned three television series between 2008 and 2022.
