Seth MacFarlane Discusses Ted’s 20-Season Prospects

Seth MacFarlane believes his hit comedy series Ted has the staying power to run for two decade-long seasons. As the prequel series recently launched its Season 2 on Peacock, the creator and voice of the infamous talking bear shared optimistic but disappointing views about the show’s future.

Seth MacFarlane says Ted could have 20 seasons

While there are no plans for live-action Ted Season 3 for now due to the show’s high cost, Seth MacFarlane sees no creative roadblocks preventing the show from continuing for years. In a conversation with Collider, MacFarlane explained why the series has such long-term potential.

“I will not out any particular streaming series — you can do that math in your head — but there are certain series that are premise-based and other series that are character-based, which is how television operated for decades,” MacFarlane said.

“You watch Friends, you watch The Office, those are character-based shows. If something is character-based, it can go indefinitely because it’s whatever situation you choose to put these people into, because it’s the people that your audience is showing up for,” he added.

Despite Ted Season 3’s disappointing update, the creator’s comments seem to offer hope for a potential continuation. MacFarlane emphasized that the show’s foundation rests on its characters, not just its high-concept premise of a living teddy bear. “That’s the simplest answer I can give. Ted is a character-based show,” MacFarlane continued.

“The only thing that hinders us is the expense. To create the bear is a lot of money. But you have these fantastic actors, you have this fantastic writing crew.” Further adding, he stated, “You can do as many as you want. I mean, you could do 20 seasons of this thing, and it would work. But you have the CGI element that makes it challenging. But story-wise, to answer your question, it can be indefinite. There’s no limit to the number of stories you can tell with characters that people want to visit week after week.”

For now, we are getting a follow-up show to the Ted movies in an animated format. While there won’t be any more live-action seasons of the prequel show, the sequel series could certainly continue for a long time in an animated format, if the cost could be kept in check and if the viewers accept the new medium.

Ted Season 2 picks up with the duo’s final year of high school underway. John remains as awkward as ever, while Ted continues his foul-mouthed, unruly ways. The family still has plenty of adventures to pack into the semester. It’s currently streaming on Peacock.
