Netflix’s Popular 9-Part Series Filming & Release Date Get Bad News

The latest update on the release date of Season 2 of a Netflix series may disappoint fans of the crime-drama. While the next installment is moving forward, new production details suggest that the series will take longer to reach screens.

Dept. Q Season 2 likely to finish filming in December 2026

Season 2 of Dept. Q is moving forward with production plans now taking shape for later this year. The next chapter of the crime thriller, which streams on Netflix, is expected to begin filming in Edinburgh, Scotland, in July 2026. It continues through the end of the year, with production likely wrapping in December 2026, as per Production Weekly.

Previously, What’s on Netflix suggested that filming could start in spring 2026. However, more recent production listings indicate that the schedule has shifted, with principal photography now set to begin on July 13, 2026. The shoot is expected to follow a roughly five-month production timeline, keeping the series in production in Edinburgh until mid-December.

Developed by Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani, the series serves as an English language adaptation of the Department Q novels written by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen. The story follows a specialized investigative unit that focuses on complex cold cases, with Detective Carl Morck at the center of the narrative.

Matthew Goode is confirmed to return in the lead role as Morck for the upcoming season. Other returning cast members include Alexej Manvelov as Akram, Leah Byrne as Rose, and Jamie Sives as Hardy. At present, no additional actors have been announced for the second season. However, further casting updates are expected once production begins.

Frank will also return to direct the new season. The project is produced by Left Bank Pictures in collaboration with Sony Pictures Television. Frank also serves as an executive producer alongside Andy Harries and Rob Bullock.
