A 2025 black comedy starring Emma Stone will soon be available to stream on Netflix. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, with Stone headlining opposite Jesse Plemons, it is the second time the three have collaborated on a film. It is now in the running for Best Picture at the upcoming Oscars.
Bugonia streams on Netflix in April
Bugonia’s Netflix streaming date is Sunday, April 26, 2026.
The film is the official remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!. Joon-hwan was initially hired to direct the remake as well. However, due to health issues, he stepped away from the role but continued to serve as a co-producer, per The Guardian.
Subsequently, the studio hired Yorgos Lanthimos. He directed the film based on a screenplay by Will Tracy. During an interview with Polygon, Tracy said he had seen the South Korean film only once and did not plan on making a faithful adaptation.
Bugonia stars Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone, among others. This is the second time Plemons has worked with the director after 2024’s Kinds of Kindness. Meanwhile, alongside starring, Stone is also a co-producer, making it the fourth time she has worked with Lanthimos. The two previously collaborated on The Favourite in 2018, Poor Things in 2023, and Kinds of Kindness in 2024.
Interestingly, the character Stone plays was a man in the original. Hereditary director Ari Aster, who is also one of the film’s producers, reportedly suggested the idea of gender-swapping the central character.
Bugonia debuted at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2025. It later premiered in cinemas on October 24, 2025. Both audience and critics were receptive to the film. It currently has a 87% Tomatometer score and 84% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it earned only $42.9 million at the box office. It was reportedly made on a $55 million budget, per Deadline.
Ahead of its Netflix arrival, Bugonia has received four nominations at the upcoming 2026 Oscars, including for Best Picture and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Emma Stone.
