Michael J. Fox & Michael Douglas’ Hit ’90s Movie Is Leaving Netflix

A 1995 political comedy featuring Michael J. Fox will soon exit Netflix’s content library. Directed and produced by the late Rob Reiner, the story follows a widowed president who falls in love with environmental lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade.

Here are all the details on the film’s upcoming Netflix departure.

The American President departs from Netflix in April

The American President will not be available to stream on Netflix from Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

Oscar-winning Aaron Sorkin served as the lead writer. The cast features Michael J. Fox as Lewis Rothschild, Michael Douglas as President Andrew Shepherd, Annette Bening as Sydney, Martin Sheen as MacInerney, David Paymer as Leon Kodak, and Samantha Mathis as Janie, among others.

Robert Redford was set to star in The American President. However, after the studio hired Rob Reiner, the actor left the project. Reportedly, the actor was looking to work on a love story, but the director wanted the story to be “ultimately about politics” (via Entertainment Weekly). Furthermore, Redford reportedly wanted Emma Thompson to star opposite him, but she turned down the role. The roles finally landed with Douglas and Bening.

Released on November 17, 1995, the film received a favorable reception from both critics and audiences. It currently has an impressive 90% Tomatometer score and 77% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. Commercially, the movie earned $107.8 million globally (via Box Office Mojo). The following year, it earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Score, though it lost to Pocahontas.

Interestingly, the filmmakers built an extensive set of the White House’s Oval Office, East Wing, and West Wing at Reiner’s Castle Rock Entertainment studio. It was later used in other films, such as 1995’s Nixon and 1996’s Independence Day.

Netflix subscribers have until the end of this month to stream The American President on the streaming platform.
