Jenna Dewan, who plays Bailey Nune in the ABC police procedural TV show The Rookie, has addressed whether her character and Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan will divorce in the upcoming episodes. The Rookie is currently airing its eighth season, and one of its primary storylines involves Bailey moving to Washington, D.C., for a job at the Pentagon. As Nolan didn’t move with her, it did have some impact on their relationship, leading to speculations about a potential split.
Jenna Dewan discusses whether Nolan and Bailey’s marriage will survive
Dewan clarified in an interview with Parade that Bailey’s move to the capital doesn’t mean that she is leaving the show. She revealed that she had a discussion about this with showrunner Alexi Hawley, who assured her that they weren’t writing her out of the story. Dewan then reflected on how the development is affecting Bailey and Nolan’s marriage.
“We had the fight that kind of came out of nowhere,” Dewan explained. “I think that it’s real. I believe you get in a relationship, and especially a loving relationship, but you are hopefully two people that are walking the same path. But at times, there are going to be moments where you are your own individual, and there are going to be different opportunities and jobs that come along that are not going to be in town, and then you find yourself at those crossroads.”
According to Dewan, Nolan has “noticed” Bailey’s ambitions in life and career and supports her decisions, even if that puts significant physical and emotional distance between them. Dewan seemed to be optimistic about Nolan and Bailey. She underscored her character’s traumatic past with her abusive former husband and noted that Bailey knows that her life with John is “stable” and that he loves her.
The Supergirl actress added, “So initially, I think there’s some doubt with that, with can we get through this, and does he really want this for me? And in time, she realizes again, okay, we are a solid force.”
The Rookie airs weekly on Mondays.
