Hit FX Crime Drama Series Sets Prime Video Streaming Date

All seven seasons of a gritty cop drama will soon be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Debuting in 2002, it was one of FX’s first drama series intended to set the tone for the network, similar to what The Sopranos did for HBO. Needless to say, the show achieved massive success.

The Shield starts streaming on Prime Video in March

All seven seasons of FX’s The Shield are scheduled to stream on Amazon Prime Video starting Wednesday, March 25, 2026, per the company’s blog.

The story centers on Vic Mackey, a tough and highly corrupt detective who leads a unit called the Strike Team. They work in the fictional Farmington “The Farm” District of Los Angeles and use criminal ways to tackle local gangs. While they often get results, the team also steals money from their raids.

The show’s cast features Michael Chiklis, Walton Goggins, Catherine Dent, Reed Diamond, Michael Jace, Kenny Johnson, and Glenn Close, among others. Shawn Ryan served as the showrunner and as one of the lead writers throughout its run. He also contributed to shows such as Angel, The Unit, and S.W.A.T.

Before the show materialized, FX was looking for a drama series to set the tone for its network. Kevin Reilly, the then- president for entertainment at the FX network, said, “When we committed to put on our first drama series, I wanted to set the tone for the network and find an antihero but not do a cop show” (via The NY Times).

However, after reading Ryan’s script for The Shield, Reilly was very impressed and decided to produce it. After the 9/11 attacks, Fox executives believed that it would be inappropriate to showcase cops in a negative light. But following the success of Denzel Washington’s Training Day, they finally gave the show the green light.

As a result, the pilot aired on March 12, drawing 4.8 million viewers—the highest viewership for the network at the time. Both critics and audiences took a liking to the show. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a a 90% Tomatometer score and 96% Popcornmeter score. Furthermore, it ranks at 101 on IMDb’s Top 250 Shows list.
