New God of War Game Is Coming, but Without Its Biggest Star — Report

The winds of change are blowing in the realm of Norse mythology, with rumors of a bold new game in the popular God of War series. The gaming franchise is reportedly taking a dramatic turn, at the heart of which is a shift in leadership that marks the departure of the series’ biggest star.

New God of War game reportedly in works without Kratos

A new God of War game is rumored, but without the franchise’s iconic protagonist, Kratos, as the lead. This paves the way for a fresh narrative direction and potentially a new lead character to take center stage.

Rumors suggest that Faye, Kratos’s second wife, is taking the lead in the new God of War game. The upcoming game will reportedly focus on Faye’s story before the events of the last two games. A Jötun with foresight abilities, Faye was a formidable warrior and the original bearer of the Leviathan Axe. God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök previously explored her storyline.

In July 2025, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier hinted at Cory Barlog’s next project, saying, “It’s not a new IP, but it might feel like one.” He had claimed that the director behind God of War (2018) has been working on a secret project. The mystery unraveled on March 1, 2026, with insiders pointing to a bold new God of War game. Schreier subtly confirmed, saying, “I suppose now it’s become obvious what I meant.”

Additionally, on March 2, reliable leaker NateTheHate revealed additional information about the game. He confirmed that Cory Barlog’s next project is indeed a God of War game starring Faye, with a focus on action and a potential release in late 2026 or early 2027. Fellow gaming insider Shpeshal Nick backed him up, stating that the details aligned with his own understanding.

However, it is advisable to take the information with a grain of salt, as plans can change along the way, despite the reliability of the sources.
