Formula One has officially named Idris Elba as its new Global Brand Ambassador. The move comes right after the rollout of F1’s ‘All To Drive For’ campaign, which featured the actor. The partnership also rides the wave created by the movie F1, where Idris featured alongside Brad Pitt. The film pulled in over $633 million worldwide.

In the movie, Idris played Joshua Pearce, a rising talent driving for a fictional F1 team. The production was filmed at real Grand Prix weekends with full backing from Formula 1. Idris went through intense training to prepare for the part. The hands-on experience turned him into a fan of the sport.

President and CEO of Formula One Stefano Domenicali welcomed Damson Idris to the F1 family with strong praise. He said he was thrilled to make the partnership official. Domenicali noted that Idris helped attract fresh eyes to the sport through the film and noted that the actor aligns with F1’s plans for growth. “With his incredible platform… together we will push the boundaries of how we reach fans (via Formula 1).”

Idris shared the excitement, saying he has always gravitated toward spaces where “culture, performance, and precision meet” and believes Formula 1 sits right at “the centre of that.” He explained that spending time with teams and drivers gave him a new level of respect for the sport’s innovation and intensity. The actor further expressed that he is “genuinely excited“ to take on the role of Global Ambassador.

As he steps into the role, Idris will show up at multiple Grand Prix and back marketing pushes designed to bring new audiences to the sport.
