Body language expert Judi James suggested that the past week’s turmoil may have lingered in small, almost invisible ways. “William and Kate delivered their usual, impeccable red carpet A-list glamour,” James told HELLO!. “But there are a handful of tells that might reflect the undeniable tensions of the past week.”
“[The royals] walk side by side with their arms hanging loose at their sides, with a closeness of the dangling inner hands suggesting a desire to clasp hands here or perhaps to perform the kind of signature truncated touches, pats and strokes they often give each other to support each other at events like this,” she pointed.
William kept his right hand slightly curled, with his index finger touching his thumb. James described it as a possible “self-soothe ritual,” often associated with stress regulation. She also noted fleeting facial expressions from the Prince. “There are moments where his lips are pulled inward and his brows pulled into a small frown, suggesting some anxiety,” she observed.
Kate’s expression remained steady throughout the evening, but James suggested even her smile carried nuance. “Kate’s smiles are as impeccable as usual,” she said, “although there is a very slightly edge-to-edge placing of the teeth, which again could signal inner tension.”
Unlike some previous appearances, the couple’s arrival inside the auditorium was low-key. There was no grand announcement when they took their seats. Still, an eyewitness told HELLO! that a ripple of excitement moved through the room as heads turned and whispers spread.
