The Night Agent Creator Explains Season 3’s Most Shocking Death

With The Night Agent Season 3 featuring some of the Netflix series’ most shocking deaths, program creator Shawn Ryan has come out to explain the demise of a fan-favorite character. In a recent interview, he opened up about the death of Catherine Weaver (Amanda Warren), revealing why they decided to kill off Peter Sutherland’s (Gabriel Basso) Night Action handler.

The veteran television producer recently noted that Catherine had to die in The Night Agent Season 3 to further Peter’s arc.

Admitting that Catherine’s death doesn’t have a “simple reason” behind it, Shawn Ryan explained to TV Insider, “It’s a political thriller. Not everyone’s going to survive. It’s not like you’re spinning lottery balls, oh, it’s Catherine’s turn to die. Of all the different creative angles that we considered, we liked the angle of Peter having to step up into more and more leadership shoes, and the loss of Catherine, and the way that that would fuel that ultimately was the best creative thing.”

Notably, Catherine meets her end in The Agent Season 3 Episode 2 during her pursuit of the Broker. While she’s in close proximity to Jacob Monroe’s decoy car, the vehicle accidentally detonates, instantly killing her.

Per Ryan, Catherine’s death seems to have done the job, as “it propelled Peter into a place that we hadn’t seen him, where he couldn’t just sort of go to Catherine and ask, well, what do I do now? He has to continue to evolve.”

The Night Agent boss also praised Amanda Warren’s professionalism, noting, “We wanted to use [Catherine] in the first two episodes, and that wasn’t something that had contractually been agreed to. So I had to call Amanda and explain what we wanted to do and why we were doing it. And to her credit as an actress, she totally understood the power of that storyline, what it represented for the show and for Peter, and she embraced and just played the hell out of the role of Catherine in those first two episodes.”

While Netflix has yet to greenlight Season 4, Ryan confirmed that The Night Agent team has been working on the installment’s scripts for “a few months.”
