Popular Show About Dutch Royal Family Gets Spin-off

A popular TV show inspired by a real-world royal family has unveiled a spin-off. Máxima is a Dutch biographical drama series adapted from the 2022 novel Patria, los primeros años de Máxima Zorreguieta by author Marcia Luyten. Both the novel and the series delve into the life of Queen Máxima of the Netherlands and her developing relationship with Willem-Alexander. Meanwhile, the spin-off will revolve around Princess Mabel of Orange-Nassau and Princess Margarita de Bourbon de Parme.

Máxima unveils spin-off The Other Royals – A Máxima Story

Maxima expands its franchise with the very first spin-off, The Other Royals – A Máxima Story. Its narrative will begin in 1999, when Princess Mabel and Princess Margarita meet their respective partners.

According to producer Rachel van Bommel, although the team introduced a few more members of the Dutch royal family in Season 2, they couldn’t “use everything.” Van Bommel added, “We show [Princes] Friso of Orange-Nassau and Constantijn of the Netherlands yet we never delve into their stories. There was so much more to tell” (via Variety).

Notably, Máxima Season 2 premieres in the Netherlands on March 14. Later, it will debut on international networks. A third season is in development.

The cast of the spin-off includes Claire Bender as Princess Mabel and Bram Suijker as Prince Friso. Millstreet Films will produce the five-hour series with FBO and Beta Film. Saskia Diesing, who has helmed episodes of the original series, will also direct the spin-off with Hiba Vink.

Van Bommel noted the new series explores “human perspective,” elaborating, “If you give birth and then have to show yourself, and your child, to 17 million people, audiences can understand how that feels. They are royals, but they also have children who become teenagers, fall in love, and sneak out of the house.”

Justus Riesenkampff, EVP Nordics & Benelux of Beta Film, underlined the fundamental differences between the main characters of the two shows. “Máxima seems almost untouchable at times,” Riesenkampff noted. “Everything works out for her. Mabel and Margarita struggle much more. And that, again, is actually very human.”
