The Simpsons EP Explains How 1 Death Could Mean ‘End of Everything’

Mike Price, who serves as an executive producer on The Simpsons, revealed in a recent interview what could potentially be the “end of everything” for the iconic Fox animated show. This comes amid The Simpsons airing Episode 800 as part of the two-episode Season 37 finale.

Mike Price says one character’s death would be the ‘end of everything’ for the iconic show

The 800th episode of The Simpsons deals with the prospects of loss, with Marge hoping to get the family dog, Santa’s Little Helper, healthy.

When asked by Collider if there was ever a plan to opt for a darker ending to the storyline, Mike Price noted that the death of the beloved canine character was always an improbability.

“There was never going to be a world, I don’t think, where it ended with the dog really dying or anything like that,” the Emmy-winning writer and producer said. “We couldn’t picture that. No, there was never a moment where we were like, ‘Oh, the dog should really be gone.’ He’s such an important part of the show, too. I know there’s been a lot of discourse lately about various characters on the show dying. It’s one thing to kill off Larry the Barfly, but if you kill off Santa’s Little Helper, that will be the end of everything.”

Santa’s Little Helper has been part of the narrative of The Simpsons since the very first episode of the series. In fact, Homer and Bart bring the dog home in that episode. Accordingly, as Price notes, he is an important aspect of the show, a member of the eponymous family.

Notably, Noah Wyle, Katherine LaNasa, and Taylor Dearden from the popular HBO Max series The Pitt voice medical personnel trying to help Santa’s Little Helper in the 800th episode.

The Simpsons aired its first episode on Fox on December 17, 1989. Its voice cast includes Dan Castellaneta as Homer Simpson, Julie Kavner as Marge Simpson, Nancy Cartwright as Bart Simpson, as well as Yeardley Smith as Lisa Simpson.
