Unfamiliar Season 2 Has To Meet 1 Condition for Netflix Renewal

A new German show, Unfamiliar, has only been on Netflix for a few days, and fans recently received an update on its potential renewal. However, it has already cultivated a robust audience and amassed incredibly strong viewership, becoming the most-watched show on the platform globally. Naturally, questions about whether the new series will get a second installment have surfaced. Now, one of the show’s producers has revealed what it would take to make Season 2 a reality.

Unfamiliar producer on how Season 2 could happen

Andreas Bareiss, Unfamiliar’s producer, stressed in a recent interview that the chances for Season 2 getting renewed depended on viewership. He told The Spot while promoting the new series, “Of course, we would very much like that, and I assume that Netflix would also be interested. But at the end of the day, the viewers will decide.”

His comments were echoed by Sabine de Mardt, another one of the show’s producers. Speaking to Deadline, she said that Season 2’s chances hinged on the audience’s decision. She expressed confidence that they would make the right decision and also said that they had “lots of ideas for various seasons.”

As of January 11, 2026, Unfamiliar is the most-watched show on Netflix globally. Sitting at #1 on the top 10 streaming charts as of writing, it surpasses other popular shows like Bridgerton (#3), The Lincoln Lawyer (#4), His & Hers (#5), and Singles’ Inferno (#7) (via FlixPatrol).

Meanwhile, in the United States, the show still enjoys strong viewership. As of writing, it is ranked #4 on the top 10 streaming chart. It is behind Bridgerton (#3) and The Lincoln Lawyer (#2).

Accordingly, based on Bareiss and de Mardt’s comments about viewers deciding the series’ fate, a Season 2 seems likely. However, Netflix has yet to give official word on Unfamiliar getting renewed for a second season as of writing.

Unfamiliar Season 1, which premiered on February 5, 2026, consists of six episodes. Created by Paul Coates, the show follows a married couple and two former spies, Simon and Meret. The pair operates a Berlin safe house until a threat from their past re-enters their life. Consequently, they find themselves running from multiple threatening parties aggressively pursuing them.
