Tom Hanks’ Greyhound 2 starts production, hints at 2027 release date

Apple Studios has formally moved ahead with Greyhound 2. The studio has launched production in Australia on the sequel to the World War II naval drama led by Tom Hanks. The actor is returning to lead the film and has also written the script, continuing another role he served on the original movie.

Several other members of the original cast are also coming back for the sequel. According to Deadline, Stephen Graham is returning as Charlie Cole, and Elisabeth Shue is also set to reprise her role. Jack Patten has joined the ensemble, while further casting is still underway. Behind the camera, Aaron Schneider is again directing, and Gary Goetzman is producing through Playtone. The project is being supported by Screen NSW’s Made in NSW Fund as filming continues in Australia.

The sequel expands the original story by following Captain Krause and the crew of the USS Greyhound beyond the Battle of the Atlantic. As per the previous report, the sequel will focus on the captain and crew of the Greyhound and will take a more expansive approach to the film’s scope, going from the war in Europe to the Pacific.

The original Greyhound, released on Apple TV in 2020, drew strong viewership. It also earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound. That film followed a newly promoted U.S. Navy captain tasked with protecting a convoy of dozens of ships while under constant threat from German submarines during the early stages of America’s entry into World War II.

As of now, Apple has not announced an official premiere date for the sequel. However, the project’s current schedule points toward a possible 2027 debut.
