Disney+ unveils creative team behind Eragon

Disney+ has confirmed key creative leads for its live-action adaptation of Eragon, based on Christopher Paolini’s The Inheritance Cycle series (via Deadline).

Todd Harthan will co-create the series with Paolini and serve as co-showrunner alongside Todd Helbing. Marc Webb has joined the project as executive producer, and a writers’ room began development work in late 2023.

20th Television produces the series and also backs ABC’s High Potential, where Todd Harthan holds an overall deal. Bert Salke executive produces through his Co-Lab 21 banner, having optioned the rights to the book series in 2022. Rachel Moore, Christopher Paolini, Harthan, and Todd Helbing also serve as executive producers.

Eragon tells the story of a teenager who becomes the first Dragon Rider in over a century. Alongside his dragon Saphira, he learns ancient magic and challenges a tyrannical king. First published in 2002, the book remained on The New York Times Children’s Books Best Seller list for 121 weeks. Publishers have released it in more than 50 countries, with global sales exceeding 40 million copies.

20th Century Fox released the original film adaptation in 2006, casting Edward Speleers, Jeremy Irons, and John Malkovich. The film earned $250 million worldwide but received mostly negative reviews and did not lead to sequels.

Todd Harthan created Rosewood and executive-produced The Company You Keep and The Resident. He also co-wrote and is producing the feature Rule of Three with James Roday Rodriguez. Todd Helbing co-created Superman & Lois and worked on The Flash, Smallville, and Black Sails. Marc Webb directed The Amazing Spider-Man films and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Christopher Paolini holds the Guinness World Record as the youngest author of a bestselling book series. He also wrote To Sleep in a Sea of Stars and received representation from WME, Writers House, and Weintraub Tobin.
