Lou Diamond Phillips Names 1 of the Most Exhilarating Shoots of 42-Year Career

A fan recently asked Lou Diamond Phillips on social media what it was like to work with Denzel Washington on Courage Under Fire. He replied that he had to bring his best performance at all times so actors like Washington and Meg Ryan didn’t outshine him. A fan asked Phillips about his experience working with Washington on the sets of Courage Under Fire on X (formerly Twitter). He replied, “You brought your A game 24/7. Or get blown off screen. And if you survived Denzel, Meg Ryan was next in line to eat your lunch.” Further sharing his thoughts on Damon, he added, “Oh, and an unknown guy named Matt Damon was there just in case you thought you could coast. One of the most exhilarating shoots of my career.”

Another fan also asked whether he had any idea at the time that Damon would go on to make Good Will Hunting, his breakthrough film that earned him massive fame and attention. Phillips admitted that he knew about Damon’s movie. He wrote, “Yup. He let me read ‘Good Will Hunting’ before it was filmed. I knew he was on his way.”

The 1996 American war film follows a U.S. Army officer who reflects on a major mistake he made during Desert Storm. Things take a turn when he is tasked with investigating a female helicopter commander to determine whether she deserves the Medal of Honor.

The cast members include Washington as Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Serling, Ryan as Captain Karen Emma Walden, Phillips as Staff Sergeant John Monfriez, Damon as Specialist Andrew Ilario, Bronson Pinchot as Bruno, Seth Gilliam as Sergeant Steven Altameyer, Regina Taylor as Meredith Serling, Michael Moriarty as Brigadier General Hershberg, and Željko Ivanek as Captain Ben, among others.
