Voice actor Kozo Shioya, of Dragon Ball fame, has died at the age of 71, leaving behind an illustrious and long-standing legacy. His talent agency, Aoni Production, broke the tragic news in a statement on its website. Fans and peers across the industry paid tribute to the legendary Japanese voice actor.

Kozo Shioya passes away after sustaining cerebral hemorrhage

On January 20, 2026, Kozo Shioya, best known for voicing Majin Buu in the Dragon Ball Z franchise, died from a cerebral hemorrhage. The news was announced on his talent agency through its official website on January 28. The statement noted that the funeral was held privately with close family and friends, as per the family’s request. It also included an apology for the delayed announcement.

Shioya was born on August 18, 1955, in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. He began his voice acting career in 1982 with Wagahai wa neko de aru. In over four decades as a voice actor, he has contributed to more than 300 projects. He was widely recognized for voicing Majin Buu, Kid Buu, and Super Buu across the Dragon Ball Z franchise anime and video games. He also portrayed supporting characters like Guldo and Totapo.

Outside of Dragon Ball Z, the veteran actor has lent his voice to other iconic anime like One Piece, Naruto, Akira, Bleach, Abarenbō Rikishi!! Matsutarō, Ayakashi – Samurai Horror Tales, Ranma ½, Digimon Fusion, and Karasu Tengu Kabuto, among others.

This impressive work has left a lasting impact on anime fans who grew up watching his work. Fans across social media platforms mourn his passing and have shared tributes and condolences with his family.

His co-star Toshio Furukawa, who voiced Piccolo in the Dragon Ball series, paid a heartfelt tribute on X. In his tribute, Furukawa recalled his experience working with Shioya both inside and outside the studio. He also shared that people often called him “big brother.”

Kozo Shioya has a younger brother, Yoku Shioya, who is also a celebrated voice actor in the industry. He has worked on projects like Gatchaman, Demon Slayer, Perfect Blue, and a lot more.
