Ben Stiller attempts a backflip in Super Bowl commercial, but fails
Ben Stiller tries to do a backflip in his Super Bowl commercial for Instacart. Stiller stars alongside Benson Boone as rival disco performers dressed in banana costumes. Instacart shared the retro-themed ad on its YouTube channel with the caption, “For Papa! | Instacart Big Game Commercial with Ben Stiller and Benson Boone directed by Spike Jonze.” Notably, Spike Jonze directed the commercial, his first in over 20 years (via PEOPLE).
As the commercial begins, Stiller and Boone sing in unison, “We are living in the age now. Instacart lets you choose your bananas. Get ’em just how you like. From green to extra ripe.” The duo highlights Instacart’s “Preference Picker” feature and how they use it to choose their perfect bananas.
Boone enthalls the live audience with a mid-performance backflip as Stiller watches with a mix of awe and mild shock. The Zoolander star asks, “What are you doing?” Boone responds, “Just a flip,” before adding, “Use the app to control your bananas.”
Boone sings, “What a time to be alive,” and Stiller repeats and attempts to do a backflip to impress the live audience. Unfortunately, he lands on the floor with a loud thud as Boone rushes over and asks, “Gary, are you okay?” “I’m okay,” the Tropic Thunder actor replies meekly.
Stiller gets up as if nothing ever happened and announces loudly, “Come on, keep on dancing, keep on playing.” He declares his intention to do another flip, and before Boone can stop him, he is already halfway through the stunt. Unfortunately, he lands on the solid ground yet again, breaking stage equipment in the process. Stiller wakes up slightly dazed and shaken. He climbs a few more stairs on the stage and remarks, “Everybody wants me to do a flip for Instacart.”
The Night at the Museum jumps from a higher podium and crashes into the drum set, knocking the background dancers and performers in the process. He gets up and speaks in gibberish, “Papa, I did the flip,” and passes out. Towards the end, the screen reads, “Bananas, just like how you like it. Instacart.”
