Nigella Lawson Joins Great British Bake Off as New Judge After Prue Exit

After a week of online speculations, The Great British Bake Off has finally confirmed Nigella Lawson as the new judge set to join the reality baking competition in a social media post. This comes days after Dame Prue Leith announced that she’s stepping away from the role.

Nigella Lawson replaces Prue Leith on Great British Bake Off

On January 26, The Great British Bake Off announced that the celebrity TV chef will be succeeding Dame Prue Leith as the new judge.

The show’s creators broke the news with a joint post with Nigella Lawson on the show’s official Instagram page. The caption read, “We’re delighted to announce that Nigella Lawson is joining The Great British Bake Off as our new judge!”

It was then followed by Lawson’s statement. It read, “I’m uncharacteristically rather lost for words right now! Of course, it’s daunting to be following in the footsteps of Prue Leith and Mary Berry before her, great dames both, but I’m also bubbling with excitement.”

The celebrated food writer further added, “The Great British Bake Off is more than a television programme, it’s a National Treasure – and it’s a huge honour to be entrusted with it. I’m just thrilled to be joining the team and all the new bakers to come. I wish the marvellous Prue all the best, and am giddily grateful for the opportunity!”

Moreover, Lawson even commented on the post. “Thank you, thank you, thank you — I can’t wait to enter the Tent of Dreams!” Later, even Leith herself applauded the showrunners for their choice. She commented, “I was so hoping it would be Nigella! Brilliant choice,” she wrote.

Dame Prue Leith also commented on Nigella Lawson replacing her on The Great British Bake Off. She shared in an official statement, “I’m thrilled that Nigella is to experience brilliant Bake Off. She’s sassy, fun and she knows her onions — and her croissants, cake and crumble.”

Notably, Nigella Lawson started as a book reviewer and restaurant critic for The Spectator. She then became the deputy literary editor of The Sunday Times in 1986. Lawson wrote her first book in 1998, How to Eat, which sold 300,000 copies. How to Be a Domestic Goddess followed in 2000.

Lawson began her career on TV with Nigella Bites on Channel 4. She later produced more hits like Nigella Express, Nigella Feasts, and Nigella: Cook, Eat, and Repeat.
