On Thursday, January 22, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the complete nominations list for the upcoming Oscars 2026. The lists featured some of the most critically acclaimed movies from 2025. However, Wicked: For Good was notably absent from every category, including nominations for its leading ladies, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
After the announcement, Charlie Puth took to X to show support for the two actresses and express his disappointment. He wrote, “Ariana and Cynthia not getting nominated for Wicked is such a disappointment. I don’t watch a lot of movies, but I believe the amazing musicality they both showcased should be acknowledged.”
The movie’s lack of nominations came as a surprise to many, especially considering the original Wicked had received 10 nominations at the 2025 Oscars. While both Grande and Erivo were nominated last year, the movie ultimately won two awards —Best Achievement in Costume Design and Best Achievement in Production Design.
Released in 2024, Wicked became one of the surprise hits. It not only received incredibly favorable reviews but also performed well at the box office, earning approximately $758 million. In comparison, its sequel, Wicked: For Good, received mixed reviews and failed to surpass the first movie’s global collection. It earned approximately $524 million during the course of its theatrical run (via The Numbers).
Meanwhile, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is leading this year’s Oscars with 16 nominations—the highest for any movie in history. It is followed by One Battle After Another with 13 nominations. Marty Supreme, Frankenstein, and Sentimental Value received nine nominations. The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15, 2026, with Conan O’Brien serving as the host.
