Martin Short recalls almost ruining Selena Gomez’s wedding cake
Martin Short revealed he nearly destroyed Selena Gomez’s wedding cake on Jimmy Kimmel Live! He spilled some hot tea from the guarded wedding ceremony attended by the couple’s close friends and colleagues. Short confessed that he mistook the cake for dessert because it was small and not a multi-tier cake, which is usually reserved for newlyweds.
Short began by narrating that the “wedding was perfect and it was beautiful.” “So everything was perfect except the night of the reception,” the 75-year-old actor began narrating his story. He shared that it was a “big party” with “big tents” to accommodate a sizable group, including the Only Murders in the Building team members, comprising 12 cast members. Notably, actor Paul Rudd and his wife Julie were among those he was with.
Short then explained how he spotted the wedding cake, which he mistook for a dessert. The Innerspace star dished, “And there was a wedding cake by our section, but it was a small wedding cake. I just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back.”
He continued, as the audience laughed, “So after a few hours, they haven’t cut their wedding cake yet. Steve [Martin] said he was going to leave.”
Short explained that he almost sliced the cake in an attempt to stop Steve Martin from leaving the celebrations. He narrated dramatically, “Maybe I’d had a cocktail, I don’t know. So I said, ‘Oh Steve, you can’t leave.’ I had a fork in my hand. ‘You can’t leave yet without a piece of wedding cake.’ And I cut the wedding cake, one side, cut it on the other, and then all the people in our group screamed, ‘Marty!’”
The actor replied after a brief pause, “It was the wedding cake.” Short revealed that he tried to fix it with a “fork” before the cake-cutting ceremony. He explained that they had urgently called the chef, who somewhat fixed it and made it presentable.
