The Beauty receives moderate reviews and Rotten Tomatoes score

The sci-fi body horror TV series has received a mediocre rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its debut season.

Season 1 of The Beauty has scored 69 percent on the Tomatometer, based on the critics’ response.

Jarrod Jones of AV Club gave the show a positive review. “The plotting is languid but never dull, content to luxuriate in chic aesthetic indulgences, pseudo-philosophical ramblings, and a hyperfixation on human anatomy that are punctuated with fawning shots of abs, clavicles, cheekbones, and derrières,” Jones shared.

Meanwhile, TV Insider’s Matt Roush observed that The Beauty “is about as subtle as a root canal without Novocain.” The critic then proceeded to note that the series is also “fun” for viewers who can “stomach” it.

Furthermore, John Anderson of the Wall Street Journal stated that The Beauty is “utterly wacky, is increasingly absorbing, thanks largely to the cast.” He added, “Mr. Peters makes a unique sort of action hero — intelligent, not physically imposing but seductively confident. Bond-ish, almost.”

However, Patrick Smith of The Independent (UK) gave the series a negative review. “As an exercise in excess, the show is flashy yet vacant, a farrago of sorts, eschewing narrative credibility for slick visuals and jet-set backdrops from Paris and Venice to Rome and Croatia,” he wrote.

Additionally, Daniel Kurland of Bloody Disgusting called The Beauty “one of 2026’s most gorgeous – and empty – pieces of television.” He elaborated, “It begins with promise and operates like an above-average Ryan Murphy series that’s later infected with the titular virus until it devolves into beautiful nothingness.”

The Beauty has already premiered its first three episodes on FX and Hulu. The fourth episode comes out on January 28.
