Why Step Up’s Channing Tatum Has a ‘Hard Time’ Calling Himself a Dancer

Channing Tatum has essayed a wide range of roles over the years and is known for his dancing skills. The Magic Mike star, however, recently made the unexpected revelation that he doesn’t consider himself a dancer.

Channing Tatum talks about his dancing skills

From his early days as a stripper to his breakout role in Step Up, Channing Tatum’s path to success has been anything but ordinary. The Roofman actor’s dance skills have captivated audiences in films like Magic Mike, Step Up, and Hail, Caesar!. He is often compared to Hollywood legends like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire for his ability to blend old-school, athletic dance performance with modern cinema.

The man himself, however, holds a different opinion about his dancing skills. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 45-year-old made a shocking statement. Tatum told ET Guest Correspondent, Emily Curl, that he doesn’t really think that he is a dancer.

During the interview, Curl is seen asking Tatum if his daughter Everly fell in love with dance because of him, just as he fell in love with anime while exploring her interests. Responding to the question, the Dear John actor said, “Well, me and her mom.. I still have a hard time calling myself a dancer even though I love to dance.”

Tatum continued, “I never took a dance class in my life. I just freestyle, and I love dancing, and I have appreciation for dance. But her mom is, really, the real dancer.”

“She really picked up the dancing bug from her mom, and then I’ve obviously supported it. But, yeah, she’s got the genes in her, that’s for sure,” the Step Up star added.

Caught off-guard by Tatum’s confession, interviewer said, “I can’t believe you don’t consider yourself a dancer, cause it’s been 20 years since we saw you on our screens as a leading man dancing.”
