Zohran Mamdani Calls Out Whoopi Goldberg For Mispronouncing His Name

Zohran Mamdani recently called out Whoopi Goldberg for mispronouncing his name during his live appearance on The View. This happened when Goldberg gave an introduction of Mamdani during the final segment of the show after the commercial break. Instead of calling him Zohran, her tongue slipped, and she pronounced it as “Zor-han.” Her misspelling sparked laughter among the panel.

Following a commercial break, Goldberg introduced Mamdani once again for the final segment of The View. She said, “We’re back with the New York City mayor, Zor-han Mamdani.” Hearing that she mispronounced it, Mamdani, displaying a smile, further added, “One day, we’re gonna get it.” She replied by referring to him as ‘Z,’ adding that she’s trying her best to get the pronunciation right.

Others interrupted her talk, asking her to call him “Mayor Z.” Agreeing to the request, she said, “Mayor Z, that’s what I’m going to call you.” Joy Behar then points out that the ‘h’ in Zohran’s spelling is where she messes up. Blaming it on her dyslexia, Goldberg pointed at the prompter and added, “It’s also, I’m dyslexic, so it doesn’t look like what I’m seeing. I’m trying to get it right, and I’m just calling him Mayor Z.”

In a conversation with RespectAbility, Goldberg addressed the challenges of dyslexia while admitting that she doesn’t see it as a shame and that she has unique superpowers.

She added, “For me, it’s never been a source of shame. It was frustrating because they placed me in classes where I struggled due to the way my brain processes information. However, my memory for details and the ability to recall conversations from years ago are my gifts. I see them as my superpowers.” Goldberg was diagnosed with dyslexia in adulthood, though she faced significant challenges in school because she understood and learned things differently from others.
