“Zoe Saldaña, who stars in the new Avatar movie, has surpassed Scarlett Johansson to become the highest-grossing actress of all time,” Jost read from the teleprompter. “Okay, let’s see what happens if you include the box office from Scarlett’s husband’s movies.”

In a hilarious twist, Johansson’s total box office number dropped to $15.1 billion from $15.4 billion. Caught off guard, Jost burst out laughing and said, “It went down?”

This skit comes days after Saldaña surpassed Johansson as the highest-grossing actor of all time at the box office. Avatar: Fire and Ash surpassed $1.23 billion globally, pushing the actress’s total box office number to $15.5 billion. With the movie still running in cinemas, the numbers are expected to grow significantly. Johansson previously held the top spot with earnings of around $15.4 billion (via The Numbers).

While both actresses have enjoyed immense success through Marvel movies, they have achieved this milestone by starring in other major franchises as well. Outside of her work in the MCU, Saldaña has led the highly successful Avatar franchise. The first two Avatar movies earned more than $2.9 billion and $2.3 billion, respectively. As a result, $6 billion of her total comes from this franchise alone.

In contrast, Scarlett Johansson’s major success comes from the MCU, where she appeared in all four Avengers movies as well as her standalone movie, Black Widow. She also starred in The Jungle Book and Jurassic World: Rebirth, both of which earned close to $1 billion worldwide.

Colin Jost, meanwhile, has also seen some box office success, though only through supporting roles. His filmography includes The Bad Guys 2, Tom and Jerry (2021), and How to Be Single, which collectively earned a total of $488.5 million at the box office.
